Leftover dal tadka becomes a tasty grilled sandwich.

This example would have been better on thicker bread.

Ingredients

  • 2 thick slices sandwich bread (rustic seeded bread is nice)
  • 2 tsp butter
  • 1/2 cup dal tadka, previously chilled to thicken
  • 1 tbsp cilantro (coriander) chutney
  • 1 very thin slice onion
  • Dash garam masala

Notes

Coriander chutney should be available at any Desi market.

Directions

Heat half the butter in a pan over medium heat until foamy. Spread cilantro chutney on one slice of bread, top with dal and arrange onion slivers on top of that. Sprinkle lightly with garam masala. Top with second slice of bread. Toast in pan, using a cover to heat dal through and sweat onions. When ready to flip, melt additional butter in the pan and flip sandwich into melted butter. Press sandwich gently and cook until both sides are toasted and filling is hot. Cut in half and serve immediately.
